Autism signs ‘can be detected in 6-month-old babies’ by measuring brain activity

January 28th, 2012

Scientists have detected signs of autism in babies as young as six months, leading to hopes of a test for the disorder.

They made the breakthrough by measuring brain activity and believe it could lead to identifying those infants most at risk at a much earlier stage.

Around one in 100 children develops the disorder but symptoms do not usually become apparent until the second year of life.

Physical activity cuts heart attack rise globally

January 27th, 2012

Physical activity during both work and leisure time appears to significantly lower the risk of heart attack, whether a person lives in Canada or Colombia, in Poland or Pakistan, research suggests.

The research, a sub-analysis of a Canadian-led study of more than 29,000 subjects in 52 countries on six continents, also found that owning both a car and TV upped the risk of having a heart attack even more — but only in low- and middle-income nations. Staying physically fit throughout life may be one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective ways to avoid the coronary care unit, doctors say. (Pawel Dwulit/Canadian Press)

Cancer prevention: new nutrition and exercise guidelines

January 25th, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas – By improving your eating habits and increasing
your physical activity, you could significantly lower your chances
of getting cancer. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently
updated its lifestyle guidelines for cancer prevention, citing
research indicating that obesity affects the immune system and

Thats why shedding excess weight is being emphasized now more

What kind of a friend are you?

January 25th, 2012

A woman entered the same lift that I was using and gave me a blank stare. She pressed the button. Not a whimper, not a nod, not a sign of recognition. Id met her several times before, so often in fact that I would interrupt the person who was giving us the courtesy of getting acquainted with each other and say, Ive met her before; so-and-so was our mutual friend, etc. But still, every time we were introduced, shed nod out of habit, I guess, say something forgettable and that was my cue to turn my interest to someone or something else. If she could not be bothered, why should I?

You meet a lot of these characters in cocktail parties where the drinks and the din render you unrecognizable...
