Boehner’s Spending Cut Demand Rekindles Debt-Limit Fight

May 20th, 2012

(Updates with Camp comments on tax overhaul starting in 17th paragraph.)

May 16 (Bloomberg) — House Speaker John Boehner revived Republicans insistence that any increase in the nations debt limit be matched by at least as much in spending cuts, positioning his party for a renewed standoff with Democrats over the federal budget.

Allowing the debt ceiling to go up without addressing our fiscal challenge would be the most irresponsible thing that I could do, Boehner said in a speech yesterday before a conference in Washington sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

Boehners demand, which included other changes in the budget, drew fire from Democrats who said...

Jazz clean out lockers, trade barbs

May 20th, 2012

Bell, a 12-year veteran, played in only 34 games this season. Injuries kept him out for much of the time, but he had recovered from a knee injury in time to help the Jazz in their late playoff push and in the postseason. However, a disagreement with coach Tyrone Corbin kept him on the bench, he said.

I thought the way I was handled by Ty was unprofessional, but thats one mans opinion, he said.

Specifically, Bell pointed to an incident during the regular season in which he didnt know hed been put on the teams active list until he was told so by reporters and not by Corbin himself.

Thats as unprofessional as it gets in my book, Bell said.

Bell and Corbin have butted...

Tell Mel: Shattered glass ought to go to feds’ database

May 18th, 2012

The worse that could happen is a cut finger picking it up, since each of the small pieces is somewhat sharp on the edges. ?It?s safety glass,? she said.

Still, I believe there could be a safety concern if, for example, this stand were to explode and the TV fell over and injured someone. Or if a child were at eye-level when the small pieces of glass went flying.

That?s why I encouraged Bopp to report the incident to SaferProducts.gov.

When the Consumer Products Safety Commission gets a report, if you give them permission, it will post on the site. Manufacturers can use the site to make comments about the product and list recalls. Other consumers also can search to make...

More Banks Than Bankers: Economic Consequences Of JPMorgan’s Technocratic …

May 18th, 2012

When the black swan charged, hissing into JPMorgan Chase’s flank last week, first thing, I went to my financial manuals to ascertain whether the stock easily weathers the attack. These days, you don’t thumb through Moody’s and Standard amp; Poor’s fat turgid manuals; just point the mouse on your Bloomberg corporate icon and scan five years’ financials in about 30 seconds.

JPMorgan’s trading faux pas of $2 billion, maybe ranging up to $3 billion on its close out, is a black cygnet, not a warrior female swan protecting its young from intruders. Facts are facts. A trading loss of this magnitude is little more than 45 days of earning power for the bank,...
